Is Living in Manhattan Really Worth the Price?

I’ve recently taken a job in Manhattan and the daily commute has really taken a toll on me! With the exception of two brief “stints”, I’ve always lived in the outer boroughs and usually worked in the City. And surprisingly, the travel time has never bothered me before. I’ve taken daily trips by taxi to the ferry to the subway to the bus and actually enjoyed that “me time”. It gave me a chance to read, think, plan and people watch. Now, on the other hand, I can’t wait to get home. Spending 3 hours a day in transit is not what I call enjoyment anymore. I can think of so many more things that I can be doing than watching the crazies of NYC. So…I want to pick up my husband, rent out our condo and move to the big city! But can we afford it? According to the most recent stats, the average Manhattan apartment is $1.4 million. So that answer would be NO. Maybe rent? Possibly.. after crunching the numbers, the bills that we would give up by moving such as: car payments and insurance, gas, monthly transportation costs would cancel out the premium that we would pay for rent. We are still young with no children so the fast pace of the City wouldn’t bother us in the short run but long term we have already  set our minds on raising our children in “Suburbia”. It is definitely something to think about..I can be home within 10 minutes! Home in time to make dinner! More time with the Hubby! I would say it is indeed worth it even if just for a little while. What do you think?
